Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash of one of members of the juries. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
